Understanding Volcano’s Weather

In Hawaii, there are only two seasons: winter (rainy) and summer (dry). The winter season takes place roughly from October to April. Summer occurs between May and October. The heaviest rains are seen during the winter months.

Our village of Volcano sits on the slopes of Mauna Loa at about 4,000 feet in elevation. The higher climate is prone to cooler temperatures and cloudier weather. Don’t let that worry you, though. The mixture of frequent moisture and nutrient-filled volcanic soil allows for the rainforest ecosystem to thrive. Bright green vegetation surrounds you everywhere you go. You won’t see biodiversity like this in many other places.

Planning for Rain

As you plan your trip to Hawaii in April, make sure to pack accordingly. Naturally, bring a raincoat and good boots to ensure a successful trip. Bring a sweater for the cooler nights. Before going on a hike in the area or in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, make sure to take an extra pair of socks in case your feet get wet and a cover for your backpack.

Temperatures in April sit at around 60 degrees Fahrenheit with the most cloud coverage happening in the afternoon. A good rule of thumb is ‘the earlier the better.’ You will have the greatest chance of seeing the sun just after sunrise. Enjoy some local Kona coffee and a homemade breakfast at our property to start your day off right. Additionally, those cloudy evenings are the perfect time to enjoy the local dining in Volcano town

Indoor Escapes

Take a look at our list of wonderful, indoor, and rain-friendly activities to try on your next trip to Hawaii!

Arts & Culture

The Volcano Arts Center gives you the opportunity to check out the works of talented local artists. Current exhibits are Worth of Water, the Niaulani Sculpture Garden, and The Dietrich Varez Legacy Expanded Collection, a collection of giclee prints and paintings. The arts center hosts many community events such as regular nature walks, drawing classes, and movie nights.

Culinary Delights

The Big Island is world-famous for the coffee. The island’s southern region is home to many local coffee farms and the cafes that feature their coffee. Enjoy a tasting during a private tour at Sunshower Coffee Farm. Take a trip to Koana, one of our favorite nearby coffee shops. They offer more than just coffee. Try their chocolate, sea salt, honey, and tea.

If you love to cook, consider taking a cooking class. In the nearby town of Hilo, attend a farm-to-table cooking class at Kulaniapia Farms. You’ll be led around by passionate farmers whose knowledge of the harvest comes out in the flavor of the food. If you can’t get enough of the Volcano Arts Center, go back and check out the Cooking with Canoe Plants workshop to learn about the first edible plants brought to Hawaii by ancient Polynesians.

Sit Back & Relax

What better way to pamper yourself on a dreary day than in a Hawaiian spa? Just a few blocks from our Volcano vacation rental is the Hale Ho’ola Spa. Indulge in authentic Hawaiian body treatments and rejuvenation packages. For those wanting a deeper connection to the rainforest, book a private yoga session with Elizabeth at Yoga Yurt Hawaii.

An easy day hike to take with a loved one or a group of friends is the Crater Rim Trail. This path traverses the edge of the Kilauea summit caldera. Walk around one of the most active volcanoes in the world!

Water Activities

Hawaii in April means seeing peak brilliance of all the waterfalls. They are now raging with the season’s rainfall and there’s a short window to see their full beauty. Just outside of Hilo city limits, there are a handful of unique waterfalls that attract locals and visitors alike. For example, Rainbow Falls is a very popular and accessible hike. However, keep in mind that flash floods do occur in Hawaii. Keep to higher ground and take caution of footing when approaching the waterfalls.

Educational Experiences

To learn more about the culture of the Big Island, be sure to stop by the museums of Hilo. The Pacific Tsunami Museum in downtown Hilo showcases the resilient history of the city. Read survivor testimony and learn about the steps Hilo takes to ensure tsunami preparedness.

To see the beauty of the blooming native flowers up close and personal, make your way to Akatsuka Orchid Gardens. Lay eyes on the rarest species of orchids on the planet. Take your time walking through the showroom and observe the effort it takes to care for these fragile flowers. If you’re curious about a certain species, ask a staff member. They love to share their knowledge!

Supporting Local Business

To round off your Hawaii getaway, be sure to pick up a few souvenirs at local Volcano businesses. The Volcanoes Winery welcomes you to their tasting room where you can sample one-of-a-kind wines and meads. Ship a bottle back home for your next special occasion. The perfect gift for a significant other can be found at Volcano Garden Arts. Search among a plethora of contemporary Hawaiian arts like ceramics, fiber arts, paintings, and other mediums.
